Place matters. Many people are rooted to their local area because of its civic identity and their social and family connections: over 40% of workers have only ever worked in the same local area as they were born. But there are parts of the country where people feel left behind, that they are not getting fair access to jobs, wages and skills opportunities, and that their local priorities are not being delivered on by government

Place is emerging as a central theme across policy and in the Academy especially in regions within England. This three-part Seminar Series is designed to explore the dimensions of Place in Policy, their relationship with the Impact Agenda and with Funding.

Join us if you wish to:

• Know more about the role of Place in Policy and what this means in practice for you, especially for partnership working.
• Learn how Place operates as a core concept at different levels of authority and Government Policy and administration, for example in the Levelling up Agenda, and what this means for encouraging innovation and partnership working
• Understand how the concept of Place chimes with the Impact Agenda; and
• Learn where and how to get Funding for Research and Innovation work on Place.

The seminar series will provide:

• an overview on current policy on Place/Levelling Up, including the role that research and development and, specifically, the roles that partnership, Impact and innovation can play in the Place agenda;
• and insights on how different policy and funding streams can be brought together to support place-based impact and research partnership and innovation activity to bring benefit to an area/region or nation of the UK.

How will the programme work?

This programme is designed to give you the opportunity to understand the notion of Place from various perspectives, reflect on your own experiences, learn from hearing the experiences of others, and give you practical ideas and case studies that you can use to tailor to your context.

Series of three 2-3 hour online modules on:

• Seminar 1 – Place, Policy and Partnership Working – 23 February- 1-3 pm
• Seminar 2 – Place and the Impact Agenda – 24 March,  1-3 pm
• Seminar 3 – Place and Funding  28 April 2022, 1-4pm

Follow-up activities:

• Final Touchpoint to reflect on how you have put your learning into practice and explore any questions that has raised. September 2022.
• The proceedings of the Seminar series will be written up as a report and published after the workshops. It will be placed on the ARMA website and will be made accessible to all speakers, participants, and attendees, as well as ARMA members.
• A briefing will be written for and published in The Protagonist on the salience of Place.
• Academic article on Place
