Research Evaluation
The Research Evaluation SIG is for all those interested in how we can meaningfully and responsibly assess research activities and outcomes. This might include how we engage with new forms of research assessment that take in a broader range of contributions, how we monitor compliance with the open access and research data requirements of funders, how we provide evidence of ‘impact’ and positive research cultures, and the role of publication and citation data in supporting qualitative assessments.

Dr Elizabeth Gadd Research Policy Manager (Publications), Loughborough University
Elizabeth (Lizzie) Gadd works in research quality and culture at Loughborough University. She co-champions the ARMA Research Evaluation SIG. Lizzie also chairs the INORMS Research Evaluation Group and is Vice Chair of the Coalition on Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA). In 2022, she co-authored ‘Harnessing the Metric Tide: Indicators, Infrastructures & Priorities for UK Research Assessment’. Lizzie founded the LIS-Bibliometrics Forum and The Bibliomagician Blog and was the recipient of the 2020 INORMS Award for Excellence in Research Management and Leadership.
Grace Murkett, Research Policy Officer, University of Strathclyde
Grace Murkett joined the University of Strathclyde during REF 2021 preparations to support and coordinate the submission. Grace now works as Research Policy Officer, with a particular focus on promoting research quality and research integrity through the provision of policies, guidance on good practice and an enhanced research culture. She developed a particular interest in research evaluation, realising that responsibly designed research assessments can be key drivers in promoting quality, integrity and positive research cultures. As a result, she plays a core role in Strathclyde’s approach to responsible research assessment and is leading on the implementation of Strathclyde’s CoARA action plan.
Dr James E Wilson, Research & Impact Evaluation Associate, University of Bristol
James is a Research & Impact Evaluation Associate at the University of Bristol. He is responsible for providing data and analysis across the university’s research and impact portfolios, with a particular focus on bibliometrics. As subject-matter expert, he is responsible for promoting and advising on the responsible use of publication and citation metrics. James works closely with research information systems to develop new tools to capture, evaluate, and share research information, building APIs and Power BI dashboards for a range of platforms such as SciVal, OpenAlex, and Gateway to Research. He is also a member of the university’s Research Culture Committee.
Dr Urszula Pawlicka-Deger, Research Manager, Wellcome Trust
Urszula Pawlicka-Deger works as a research manager in the Discovery Research programme. She is responsible for managing portfolios across the humanities, social sciences, and population and public health within Wellcome’s new open mode schemes. Her responsibilities also include developing a continuous improvement process for the funding programme to identify areas needing enhancement and to evaluate applications through an effective and inclusive decision-making process. Her interest in research evaluation covers various aspects, primarily from the funder’s perspective, including mitigating biases in research assessment and exploring research culture as an evaluation criterion. She is a member of the TIER (Towards an Inclusive Evaluation of Research) Working Group of CoARA.
