However, increasingly they are also seeking to understand more about how these organisations work and how they can work with them to influence research agendas and funding opportunities as well as to raise their institutions’ profile. This can be through activities such as responding to open consultations, working with local enterprise partnerships and providing expertise to support local and central government work.

This workshop will cover the technical aspects of how Parliament and government work as well as the mechanisms and approaches that institutions can use to engage with it. It will also review the range of possible local partnerships and sources of support for these. The management perspective on the issues and challenges of working with these organisations and people – civil service, local and central government departments, agencies and public bodies and parliament – will also be explored.

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

• Understand how to engage with political institutions and public officials
• Know which engagement method to use and when
• Understand the importance of relationship building
• Understand, from a management perspective, the issues and challenges of working with political institutions and public officials
• Understand, from a management perspective, the costs and benefits of working with political institutions and public officials

This workshop maps to the leadership levels of the Policy and Governance and Developing Proposals sections of the ARMA Professional Development Framework.

Target Audience

This workshop will be of interest to any research manager who is interested in finding out more about:

• how local and national government, Parliament and other agencies and public bodies work
• how institutions might engage with them

Technical Knowledge Workshop

This event is a Technical Knowledge Workshop. Technical Knowledge Workshops focus on helping delegates to acquire the knowledge and behaviours required to undertake particular aspects of their role. Delegates can expect to hear form a recognised expert(s) in the topic area and can include individual and group activities and discussion. ARMA currently run ~12 technical knowledge workshops throughout the training and development annual calendar. Members receive a discount of £125 + VAT off of these events.

E-delegate Packs 

As part of your ARMA delegate experience we like to give you a pack of everything you will need for your training event. A couple of days prior to the workshop you will be attending, we will send you an information pack about ARMA, a programme for you to print out for the day and a delegate list of your fellow attendees. You may also receive presentations prior to the event if our speakers consent to this however, this is not guaranteed due to the nature of each workshop.
