Event Details

This is an introductory level workshop aimed at research administrators and managers who have limited experience of working with metrics – this could be limited in terms of time (less than 12 months) or limited in terms of the range of metrics experienced. The workshop is applicable to colleagues in different functional areas but will be particularly relevant to those who need to understand and evidence research performance as part of their role, or who aspire to do so. The workshop will introduce participants to the broad range of metrics which can be used in research & innovation management (for example input metrics, bibliometrics, altmetrics, Snowball metrics etc.) and provide some context in terms of how they are used in the sector including a case study from Queens University Belfast.

Using a mixture of presentations, exercises and discussion we will begin to explore how metrics can be used well, and turned into useful information to support decision making at different levels of the organisation, and how they could potentially be used irresponsibly.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session delegates will:

  • have gained an awareness of a broad of different research and innovation metrics
  • have seen how some of these metrics can be used (good and bad)
  • understand the key principles of the responsible use of metrics
  • have begun to understand how metrics can support decision making

*Delegates should note that this is an introductory course and although we may touch on how different metrics are calculated we will not be providing in-depth bibliometrics training.*

Prior knowledge required
