How often have you looked at a Job Description and dismissed it through not having the “right” experience, or feeling that you aren’t experienced enough to apply? Have you wanted to move into a different role or part of the sector, but doubted about whether or not you would have the rights skills? Or have you even thought about doing something different but you’re not sure how your skills as a research manager could be relevant?  It can be really challenging to know how to effectively navigate your career path, both in the short and long term. You can feel at times like you’re “boxed-in” or too “specialist”, and therefore lack appropriate opportunities for different roles and progression.

However, regardless of what area of research management that you work in, you have a transferable skill set that is crucial to a large number of different roles and areas of work, whether it be in research management, Higher Education more generally, or even in different sectors. The same can be said for people looking to move into research management, where skills developed in different sectors can be crucial to being successful in working as a research manager.

This career development session will discuss what transferable skills are, help you identify your own skill set and how you can develop such skills, and explore how you can utilise them to support you in your career development and progression. We will have speakers discussing their own experiences of moving into the research management profession from different roles and sectors, and also feature colleagues who have moved from different professions and divisions within Higher Education into different roles. As well as presentations, we’ll also have some group discussions and exercises for attendees, and colleagues will have the chance to network with fellow colleagues as part of the session.

All research management professionals are welcome to this event, and will find it valuable regardless of your level of experience. We also welcome colleagues looking to move into research management as a career, who possibly aren’t yet in a role but are looking to make a change.

We look forward to seeing you there!
