Efficiency, Equity, Quality and Security in International Research Collaboration

Like assurance and due diligence, Trusted Research and security in international research collaboration is an increasingly important part of the leadership, governance and risk management of research organisations and funders. It is a complex and challenging landscape that is not always well understood across the sector. In efforts to reduce and mitigate risk it is essential for the sector to consider how compliance and risk management can be achieved with efficiency and without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.

In May 2022, a consortium led by ARMA UK was awarded a grant by Research England to explore how the recommendations made by the ARMA-led ‘Due Diligence in International Research – Options for Improved Efficiency, Equity and Quality’ report could support the aims of Trusted Research and security in international research collaboration more broadly. By revisiting the ARMA report  ‘Due Diligence in International Research’ published in April 2021 – this project reflects whether the original recommendations are able to support enhanced security, as well as efficiency, equity and quality.

Through a survey and set of roundtable discussions the project team invite discussion from across the sector on how Trusted Research and security in international research collaboration is being understood, how its requirements are being implemented, where stakeholders are encountering barriers and challenges and how we can act as a sector to support more better ways of working.

We wish to explore in more detail common issues and gather quantitative and qualitative data to inform a new set of findings that will be presented to Research England in Oct 22 with a view to making this publicly available in Jan 2023.

The Survey:

We are seeking views from across the sector to inform our report to Research England and would like to invite organisations to respond to our survey  by 29th July, 2022.

We would like one collective response per organisation, so we would ask you to collaborate with colleagues that have responsibilities related to Trusted Research, security, international research collaborations and due diligence.

Roundtable events:

We are also holding a number of roundtable events, which will allow us to explore in more detail common issues and gather qualitative data from across the sector.

Each roundtable will be primarily focused around different cohorts: research managers & administrators, funders and sector bodies. Roundtables will be held virtually and for around 120 mins.  All contributions will be treated anonymously.

Numbers are limited to a maximum of 30 attendees per roundtable and it is important that we have a broad set of stakeholder engagement so if you are interested in attending and participating in one of the roundtable events, then please submit an expression of interest:

Roundtable for research managers & administrators working in research organisations:
