This May we are excited to be able to run the first in-person iteration of the Research Management: Building Relationships, Increasing Our Influence workshop. We started this session two years ago online and developed it from our experience of working with similar colleagues from other institutions and recognising the value from learning from each other and how we all undertake key aspects of our roles. We also realised that it is useful to run this type of workshop for more experienced colleagues who have already completed many of the other ARMA courses that are available.
Therefore, this session is designed for experienced research development managers who have a few years (at least 2-3) of experience supporting the development of research proposals but would like to further develop their skills and effectiveness, so it would also benefit those who have substantially more experience. We may offer advice and guidance that is technically correct, however we also need to ensure that our advice is acted upon for it to be effective. Therefore, how do we increase our influence and build effective relationships?
The session is facilitated by three experienced research managers from different institutions and features short introductory provocations, reflections and learnings from the facilitators own practice. The majority of the session will feature peer learning through small group discussions, with opportunities to share and learn what works for different people.
The session will be run under the ‘Chatham House’ rule to create the conditions for open and frank discussions so that there is real value in attending this to learn from other’s experience.
The session will explore and cover:
- How to build relationships
- Different approaches to influencing and persuading and giving feedback
- Discuss common challenges
- Learn from common experiences and challenges
- Share practical tips and advice – learn what works for other people.
There will also be plenty of opportunities to network with other attendees at the event, ask questions and pose common challenges to the facilitators for discussion and suggested approaches. We have found that attendees have been able to build up useful networks outside their own organisations from attending this workshop and feel more supported in some of the challenges they are facing in their work.
The session will be run in person, from 10am-4pm. We really look forward to welcoming attendees to what will be a stimulating and useful day. Click here to register.
