Trusted Research and Innovation, the campaign authored by the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), and more broadly, ‘research security’ is among the most challenging cross-cutting agendas facing the research management community today.
Trusted Research and Innovation asks us to consider the suitability of our collaborators from the point of view of national and economic security risk, undertake increasingly detailed due diligence, navigate complex regulatory frameworks and evolving funder requirements, and engage academic colleagues in a process of cultural change, all in a constantly changing geopolitical environment!
In 2023, the ARMA Complex Collaborations report highlighted that most research organisations had begun to adapt their processes but that the research management community was facing significant challenges in operationalising research security measures, including the high degree of technical expertise required, the need for cross-departmental working and advocacy, and the lack of a central service to support the research management community.
Whilst there has been significant progress, including the emergence of a research security community of practice, there remains a need to provide those who need a working knowledge of Trusted Research with a broad overview of key aspects of Trusted Research.
Our Introduction to Trusted Research session is designed to help those who are new to Trusted Research, or those who may be responsible for identifying, addressing, and managing Trusted Research risks, either independently or in collaboration with colleagues.

We are:
Tom Morgan is a Senior Associate at global law firm CMS, having previously worked in university research offices for 13 years. Tom established the Research Compliance Team at the University of Bristol and works with universities and other research organisations across research law including contracts, IP, clinical trials, and Trusted Research and Innovation.
Charles Shannon is a seasoned strategist in research management, currently leading Research Innovation Quality and Policy at Loughborough University. With over 15 years of experience across institutions like the University of Cambridge, , Imperial College London and Ulster University, he excels in research governance, compliance, and policy development. His expertise includes managing research funding, risk assessment, and cross-functional collaboration, while also advising on ethics and regulatory matters. An active member of professional bodies such as ARMA and NCURA, Charles is a trusted advocate for research compliance and regulation and a regular presenter at conferences.
Joe Timlin is a Trusted Research Manager at Loughborough University and co-author of the ARMA Complex Collaborations report. He has also represented the sector at research security events across Europe on behalf of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Science and Innovation Network and Universities UK International.
